PJs and Pages: A Family Literacy Night at Scholarship Prep Oceanside

PJs and Pages: A Family Literacy Night at Scholarship Prep Oceanside

Hot chocolate, picnic blankets, pajamas, and a campus full of Scholars and families reading together under the open sky. That was PJs and Pages, Scholarship Prep Oceanside's family literacy night held this week, and it was exactly what Principal Charity Grieshaber had in mind when she first brought the idea to life.

"My hope for this event is to spark a love for literacy in our fast-paced, highly digital world," Grieshaber shared. "Literature serves as a powerful connector. It builds empathy, inspires creativity, and opens the door to meaningful and rich conversations."

The evening was designed to feel nothing like a regular school night. Families spread out on picnic blankets as Scholars made their way through a lineup of hands-on stations led by Oceanside's lead teachers and staff members: a bookmark decorating table, a book walk where books replaced cake walk prizes, a comic and graphic novel station, a poetry corner, and a buddy reading station hosted by ASB. The night included a read-aloud by local author RaShonne J. Darling, creator of The Curl Girls series, made possible through a connection with the Pep Squad.

That connection turned out to be central to the whole event. The Pep Squad stepped up to fund the coffee and hot chocolate from a local shop, supported several activities, and showed up as volunteers throughout the night.

"Having a family support group on campus increases connection from home to school and enhances our common mission to support Scholars' academic and personal growth," Grieshaber said. "Pep Squad is the common connector to the larger community and our school community."

Accessibility was at the heart of the night, across genres, formats, and ways of engaging with the written word. Because, as Grieshaber put it, the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively is a lifelong skills that open doors.

At Scholarship Prep Oceanside, those doors open early.

If you are looking for a school community that shows up for Scholars and families alike, we would love to meet you.
